Dispersal and Regrouping of Migrant Communities Essay

Dispersal and Regrouping of Migrant Communities - Essay Example Diasporas are only gatherings that vagrants structure based on a common country, culture, and so forth. Shaping a diaspora is a manner by which vagrant networks pull together in a remote nation in the wake of getting scattered in their country. A portion of these diasporas are political, and have an enormous task to carry out in the household legislative issues of both the country and the host state just as in global governmental issues and remote undertakings of states; yet once more, a portion of these diasporas are objective, and their impact is constrained distinctly to culture-of both the host state and the country. This paper additionally examines the political and social effects of diasporas. To compose this paper, an assortment of sources have been utilized books just as the web. It is trusted that the paper is indisputable in itself and acceptably clarifies everything that is significant with regards to the dispersal and pulling together of transient networks. Yann Martel, the Canadian writer, says something in his Booker Prize-winning novel Life of Pi that is significant here: Why do individuals move What causes them to evacuate and leave all that they've known for an extraordinary obscure into the great beyond Why climb this Mount Everest of conventions that causes you to feel like a bum Why enter this wilderness of strangeness where everything is new, abnormal and troublesome The appropriate response is the equivalent the world over: individuals move in the desire for a superior life. ( 2001: 77) Truly, it is maybe looking for a superior life that individuals everywhere throughout the world move. Changes in a nation's political and financial circumstance can lead individuals to move from that nation to another-all looking for a superior life. Wealthy nations in Europe and America are prime goals for vagrants from Third-World nations, clearly on the grounds that they guarantee a superior life. Resurgent ethnic, strict and patriot powers have risen up out of the frequently vicious deterioration of country states and their reconstitution. These new powers and other new highlights, similar to the transformation in worldwide interchanges, have joined with earlier social, monetary and political weights to create new examples of movement in the post-Cold War time. Accordingly, from being a generally fringe worry as of not long ago, relocation has since the late 1980s moved quickly up the global plan to turn into an issue of warmed open discussion. ( Van Hear, 1998) Questions, for ex ample, who ought to be permitted to move and the rights vagrants ought to have are producing such discussions. Xenophobia and prejudice have regularly made normal residents of a specific nation treat settlers in a manner that disregards human rights-this is additionally a prime worry for the global network. Movement is the same old thing. It has been going on for quite a long time individuals moved from Europe to America when this mainland was found, obviously looking for a superior life. Path, thinking back to the sixteenth century, the Mughals under Babur moved from West Asia to India-to overcome, indeed, at the end of the day looking for a superior life. Considerably prior, the Aryans moved from West Asia and encompassing pieces of Europe to India-that also is a case of relocation. Be that as it may, relocation in the late twentieth century and in the 21st century has accepted various extents. Van Hear specifies what different pundits have

Food and Agricultue Essay

Give in any event two current instances of how the United States has expanded its food creation. Hereditarily altering nourishments is one way the United States has developed its food increment. The utilization of hereditarily designed yields has developed quickly in nations, for example, the United States, particularly for soybeans, corn, and cotton where GM crops make up somewhere in the range of 70 and 90 percent of all out creation (Turk, 2014). Ways the United States has expanded food creation ranchers have used various procedure, some of which incorporate water system and harvest otation which can build the drawn out maintainability and has been standard practice for a long time. A stage taken almost 50 years prior to expand food creation was the green transformation, which concentrated on â€Å"monocultures of single harvests and required noteworthy contributions of vitality, water compost, pesticides and herbicides† (Turk, Bensel, 2014). â€Å"Advocates state that they have expanded agrarian creation by more than US$98 billion and spared an expected 473 million kilograms of pesticidesfrom being showered. † (Turk and Bensel, 2014, Ch. 3. 3). Devices, for example, herbicides, bug sprays, and fungicides lessen crop misfortunes both when reap, and increment crop yields. An abundant flexibly of new produce is fundamental for a sound populace. Various logical examinations exhibit the medical advantages of normally eating an assortment of new foods grown from the ground and buyers are progressively mindful of these advantages. Horticultural profitability is critical to guaranteeing that this interest can be met at a reasonable cost; and harvest security items help increment efficiency and usable harvest yields (Turk, 2014). Talk about how these progressions have influenced the earth, and what sway they have on sanitation? The utilization of hereditarily altered nourishments have be read for a considerable length of time a few enhancements have been made. Be that as it may, the greatest issue is the thing that has it done to the dirt the water and the air not to mention the food itself. Unfavorably susceptible response happen when the safe framework deciphers something as remote, extraordinary and hostile and responds in like manner. All GM nourishments, by definition have something outside and unique. What's more, a few examinations show that they incite responses (The Open Nutraceuticals Journal, 2011, 4, 3-11). Changes is agribusiness have influenced our condition with soil disintegration, water contamination, air contamination, and living space devastation (Turk, 2014). I accept that this will consistently be an issue and will keep on having upsides and downsides yet with legitimate testing they can be better. http://www. the scholarly world. edu/542384/A_Review_on_Impacts_of_Genetically_Modified_Food_on_ Human_Health http://www. croplifeamerica. organization/crop-insurance/benefits/increment food-creation Turk, J. , and Bensel, T. Chem Lab Boot Camp!

Chem Lab Boot Camp! So course 5 (Chemistry) is doing something cool. Last January, filmmakers followed around the participants of 5.301 Chemistry Lab Techniques as they struggled with the intensive, high stakes world of ChemLab Boot Camp. The footage has now been edited together in an engaging way and will be released throughout the fall in episode format. You should sign up for email notifications so you’ll know when they’re released. I saw some sneak previews of some episodes (I’m an insider!) and I can vouch for their quality. They have drama, they have characters, they have danger, they have explosions, and they have a lot of people looking good wearing lavender gloves. (Whatever company decided to go with lavender colored gloves over the safety yellow color I expected, made a good decision. See below) So you should watch the trailer here, you should sign up for updates here and you should also read this post in Inside Higher Ed about the initiative here. Ms. Watters points out that science can be cool. But you already knew that.

Torque Kinetic Energy - 5318 Words

WHAT IS TORQUE? Torque is a measure of how much a force acting on an object causes that object to rotate. The object rotates about an axis, which we will call the pivot point, and will label O . We will call the force F . The distance from the pivot point to the point where the force acts is called the moment arm, and is denoted by r . Note that this distance, r , is also a vector, and points from the axis of rotation to the point where the force acts. (Refer to Figure 1 for a pictoral representation of these definitions.) | Figure 1 Definitions | Torque is defined as = r x F = r F sin(). In other words, torque is the cross product between the distance vector (the distance from the pivot point to the point where force†¦show more content†¦Second, you should grab onto the end of the lever, and not a point near its axis of rotation. Third, you should lift in a direction that is perpendicular to the lever: if you pull very hard away from the wall or push very hard toward the wall, the lever won’t rotate at all. Let’s summarize. In order to maximize torque, you need to: 1. Maximize the magnitude of the force, F, that you apply to the lever. 2. Maximize the distance, r, from the axis of rotation of the point on the lever to which you apply the force. 3. Apply the force in a direction perpendicular to the lever. We can apply these three requirements to an equation for torque, : In this equation, is the angle made between the vector for the applied force and the lever. Torque Defined in Terms of Perpendicular Components There’s another way of thinking about torque that may be a bit more intuitive than the definition provided above. Torque is the product of the distance of the applied force from the axis of rotation and the component of the applied force that is perpendicular to the lever arm. Or, alternatively, torque is the product of the applied force and the component of the length of the lever arm that runs perpendicular to the applied force. Life Span Perspectives Paper Free Essays

In order to truly understand the life span perspectives we must first define developmental psychology, which is a field that falls under the topic of psychology that is centered on describing how individuals change and grow throughout the stages of their life. This field has also been noted to be one of the more popular fields to be studied. We, as humans, must first grasp the concept that before there can be an outcome there has to be a process or a beginning. We will write a custom essay sample on Life Span Perspectives Paper or any similar topic only for you Order Now We can always trace anything that exists back to a beginning, for people this beginning is birth and the developmental processes that follow are individual pieces of the life processes. Charles Darwin had a longing to understand just what evolution was and exactly how it worked; from this desire he drew the study of lifespan development. Adolescence and norms were first introduced to those in the field of science by way of a G. Stanley Hall publication (Boyd Bee, 2006). Within this book these scholarly individuals could read about the first observational studies of children. Within this paper you will find the definition of lifespan development, a description of the many characteristics of the lifespan perspective, and the identifying factors of the human developmental domains and periods. Lifespan Development We recognize that within the lifespan there had to be a beginning; we know this because of the work of Charles Darwin. Darwin began the inner workings of human developmental studies and those early evolutionists who shared his opinions were soon to join in his studies. Darwin’s goal was to prove his theory of evolution; it was his belief that his best chance of proving his theory was to engage in intense studies of human development (Boyd Bee, 2006). According to the American Heritage Dictionary, a lifespan is the average amount of time that an organism, material, or object can be expected to survive or last. If we look for further detail and look for the definition of development, we find that development based on biology is the process of organic growth in an individual organism, we also see that this an be defined as a biological occurrence of events in which an organism changes gradually from a simple to a more complex level (Collins English Dictionary, 2003). When we combine these two individual words we end up with a term that defines the individual changes associated with life progresses that can be tracked in correspondence to the individual’s age. People will change many times over throughout their lifetime; these developmen tal periods are the prenatal period, infancy, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. In order for one to experience growth developmental change must occur. Life span development will occur over and over, again and again throughout the individual’s life time. Although there are positives and negatives in the developmental process, developmental research and advances will continue to occur throughout an individual’s entire life cycle. Characteristics of the Lifespan Perspective All individuals develop on their own schedule and at their own pace, depending on many internal and external factors. Due to improved nutrition and health and medical knowledge a sharp rise in the average life expectancy has recently been observed. The characteristics of the lifespan perspective are lifelong, multidirectional, plasticity, contextual, multidisciplinary, and multidimensional. One’s development continues throughout their lifespan, there is no certain age that appears to be heavier in this area than others. Continued growth paired with decline affects development which can be said to attribute to the multidirectional portion of the lifespan. Many will seem to focus on the plasticity of the human lifespan, one can see this in the example of a child who has been malnourished, this child may suffer from a diminished intellect but given proper nutrition over an extended period of time the child will, indeed, regain much f the lost function and should eventually catch up to the average for his age. There are many outside forces that have a great effect on human development, these forces can be biological, historical, social, and cultural (Berk, 2007). Lifespan Domain Human Development domains all work together and are affected by one another. The categories of the domains of development are social, physical, and cognitive (Boyd Bee, 2006). The social domain encases the changes that one may find necessary in order to adapt to a new social environment, or situation, this might include developing and maintaining relationships, and improvement upon general social skills. The physical domain can be defined as the way the humans change their physical appearance. A good example of a physical change is when a child enters puberty, and again as the child becomes elderly. Within this domain it is seen that as the physical appearance changes so will the views that the individual possesses in life. Human Development Periods Psychoanalytic, cognitive, and learning are the three theories that have been shown to produce the most information on human development (Boyd Bee, 2006). Within these theories we can find information that best explains how one transitions from one moment within their life and essentially evolves to the next level. In discussing human development we must recognize the age old debate of nature versus nurture. Within this theory we must ask which, if either, is truly the strongest influence? Does the environment or genetics play the biggest part in this factor? Conclusion There are many answers that are yet to be discovered in the field of psychology in spite of the fact that there have already been so many discoveries. In the beginning there was Darwin and his theory of evolution†¦.. we do not yet know where the end may take us. How to cite Life Span Perspectives Paper, Essays

Perception and Attention Paper free essay sample

Perception and Attention Paper In the exploration of cognitive psychology, the theory of cognitive processes has been brought to light. These processes could include attention, memory, perception, sensory, and visual perception. Memory is composed of different factors such as short-term memory, long-term memory, screen memory, remote memory, replacement memory, and immunologic memory. Visual perception deals data intake from a visual standpoint. The five senses, touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing also time into the cognitive process. Perception gives an individual the ability to have insight into any given situation. This is also how an individual can gain knowledge or intuition. On the other hand, there is attention, which gives an individual to ability to focus mentally. While each concept is equally important to cognitive processes, this will paper will explore perception, attention, and the relationship between the two. Define the concept of perception Let thinks about all the things around us and how we look at them on a daily basis. When thinking about perception an individual should think about all their senses, these senses involve the ability to become aware of the changes within one’s body and mind. As you travel, you may see objects that cause you to think of various things in your life. Think about the touch of objects, the smell of various aromas the may remind you of a home-cooked meal and different types of music playing can also have an affect on a individual differently. All of these things help create a conscious familiarity and allow one to connect with the people and objects around us. However, these perceptions vary from individual. Therefore, many individual see and recognize thing for various prospective when looking at identical thing or situation. Moreover, the suggestion might not be the same to each individual. When looking at one individual’s perspective there might be a considerable change to the meaning to someone else. The flowing together of complex sensory inputs often a time creates a perception that is unreliable or unverifiable. In other words, it is based in reality (Robinson-Riegler, 2008). Breaking Down the Perceptual Organizational Process The perceptual organizational process is, according to Ruth Kimchi (2009) as the processes that create visual information into understanding units. Visual attention is the method that forms illustration information in a picture chosen. The selection chosen are important for the ability to form an opinion of his or her imaging surroundings and visuomotor, which is relevant to connecting images and motor processes. The motor process is the part that deals with movement, letting the body knows that the mind has the body’s attention. Define the concept of attention The processes that allow us to perform these dynamic cognitive operations on the information that held awareness include what referred to as working memory (Robinson-Riegler, 2008). Robinson-Riegler (2008), states that attention is limited, and that an individual cannot possibly process everything that heard. If we stop and think about it, has there ever been a time where we remember everything that we have heard or seen. It is hard enough to focus on what done, so if we are looking at our surroundings and not paying attention to what done, than we will probably not do a good job at what we are doing. It is also known that attention is considered to be flexible in a way that individuals can change from initial modes of attention to late modes (Robinson-Riegler p6 2008). Every individual has the control of how their incoming information processed in a way that they can decide the information they want processed. There are two types of attention divided attention and selective attention. In divided attention, Robinson-Rielger (2008) describe it as tasks that consist of the processing of multiple inputs, where selective attention involves choosing one input to process at the expense of others. An example would be parents who are constantly doing more than one thing at a time, whether it is cooking, changing diapers, or even picking up after their children. In selective attention, it is referred to as keeping an individual from being distracted and having them focus. For example, a student is trying to study in the library but cannot seem to focus due to the copier going off and people talking. The student knows the studying has to be done, so therefore finds way to block out all the noise. Attention is very important for everyone to understand; once an individual has, a better understanding of how they handle their attention span it will be easier for them to function in their everyday lives. Analyzing the Nature of the Attention Process The nature of the attention process is easy to comprehend; attention is the result of identifying the stimuli, be it a sound, object or image. According to Yeshurun, Kimchi, Sha’shoua, and Carmel (2007) researchers have demonstrated that perceptual organization has an effect on the routine, stimulus-driven operation of attention. For example, if an object flew extremely fast by a window, the onlooker would assume the object is a bird or a plane. The sound, whether a chirp or a hum the object made, finishes the determination of the object. In another light of attention, for example, when people required to take visual tests to obtain his or her driver’s licenses. Flashes of stars may show in different points of the screen: above, beneath, middle, and center. A reason for attention star’s movement is to see if the potential driver can hold his or her attention while driving. The other reason is to see how well the driver’s vision is. Perception and Attention Attention serves as the foundation for the beginning of an individual’s perception. The span of people’s attention is either spatial or object-based when using visual cues for perception (Robinson-Riegler and Robinson-Riegler, 2008). Spatial visual attention refers people paying attention to the space in front of them. Object-based visual attention refers to the focus on particular objects and the importance given to these objects within a scene. Visual attention brings information into focus for the people to draw conclusions from and behave correspondingly. Visual attention depends on the value people give to incoming visual stimuli. For example, when told to focus on one aspect of visual cues people may look over other aspects of the visual scene because of the inability for individuals to process all visual cues of an environment simultaneously. Inattentional blindness refers to things unfocused on in the scene and attentional capture refers to those things that are perceived by the individual (Robinson-Riegler and Robinson-Riegler, 2008). Visual stimuli combined with auditory stimulus presents a variety of ways to capture an individual’s attention. Auditory attention presents in the same manner as visual attention. People are presented with an auditory stimuli, the outcome of response is based on what characteristics attention given to the auditory stimuli. Several theories exist explaining the process of attention in receiving auditory stimuli. One is the early selection theory where information is received and filtered by a selection process by which the received information is processes (Robinson-Riegler and Robinson-Riegler, 2008). Attenuation theory refers to the process by which audible stimuli is still possibly received even when individuals attention is caught somewhere other than the exact stimulus (Robinson-Riegler and Robinson-Riegler, 2008). Whether people are aware of the auditory stimulus or not the information still passes into a degree of awareness to be later used or recalled. The information is obtained in memory because of an individual’s stored information that recognizes the auditory stimulus. Researchers also developed the late-selection theory to account for the process of audible stimuli catching ones attention when it appears to have done so. Late-selection theory states individuals perceive all audible stimuli; however, not all information receives the same attention (Robinson-Riegler and Robinson-Riegler, 2008). The information unattended to is then held in the individual’s consciousness to be used or retrieved when the individual finds a use for the information. If the information is meaningful the person perceives it. Attention strengthens the degree to which people perceive information; however, perception also occurs in the face of unconscious awareness. People perceive information despite not having consciously directed their attention toward the stimulus. Numerous studies indicate that perception occurs without awareness although the ability to recall information or the true validity of the information is obscured in some form (Merikle, Smilek, and Eastwood, 2001). Individual perception depends on the valued information observed by the individual whether visual or audible. The attention to information is what provides the ability for individuals to make perceptions about their environmental stimuli. From the information provided it is understood that perception and attention are important concepts to cognitive processes and development. It can be said that are closely related and can rely or support each other. Individuals are in control of how they feel and react in any given situation. Such feelings and reactions can dictate perception and the attention that is given to the situation at hand. One should also understand the environmental impact that can tie into these cognitive processes. References Merikle, P. M. , Smilek, D. , Eastwood, J. D. (April, 2001). Alcohol and Nutrition essays

Alcohol and Nutrition essays Have you ever wondered how alchol effects your health? Well today is your lucky day. I will talk about the various ways that alcohol effects your health. Alcohol is a term applied to members of a group of chemical compounds and, in popular usuage to the specific compound ethyl alcohol, or ethanol (Alcohol). There are 10g of alcohol in an alcoholic drink. Alcoholic is not a toxin or nutrient, even though it does contribute energy to the body (Sizer, and Whitney 334). The brain responds different, when alcohol reaches different levels in the brain. When the alcohol reaches in 0.05 our judgement is impaired. Our emotional control is impaired when the alcohol reaches 0.10 in our brain. Our muscle control is impaired once the alcohol reaches 0.15. Our vision is impaired, once the alcohol levels reaches 0.20. We are in a stupor once our brains alcohol level reaches 0.35. When our alcohol level reaches 0.50 through 0.60 we will loss conscious and sometimes we will stay in coma, and never wake up (Sizer, and Whitney 172). There are many myths that are associated with alcohol. First, many people think that a shoot warms you up, when really the alcohol diverts blood flow to the skin making you feel warmer, but it is actually cooling the body. Second, wine and beer are mild so they do not lead to addiction, most people believe, but wine and beer drinkers would have high rates of death from alcohol related illnesses, and it is not what you drink but how much that makes the difference. Synonyms for Think

Synonyms for Think Synonyms for Think Synonyms for Think By Mark Nichol The bland verb think (from the Old English word thencan, and cognate with thank) is easily supplanted by any one of an impressive assortment of synonyms, each of which has a precise connotation think cannot match. Here are some to think about. To cogitate is to think deeply and intently; the root of the word, which is unrelated to cognition (which refers to knowledge rather than thinking), stems from agitare (meaning â€Å"drive†), from which we also get agitate. Contemplate connotes thought that is extensive as well as deep; another sense is â€Å"view as possible or probable.† The root of contemplatus, the Latin source word, is templum, the word for a place where omens are observed; it is cognate with temple. Deliberate means to think carefully, as implied by its source, the adjective deliberate. An additional sense is â€Å"discuss before making a decision,† as when a legislative body meets to decide about whether to pass a law. (The derivation is from deliberare, meaning â€Å"consider carefully,† the root is possibly libra, meaning â€Å"pound† or â€Å"scale,† with the sense of weighing.) To meditate is to focus one’s thoughts on something; the word, which can, alternatively, allude to planning, also refers to a mental exercise conducted in order to achieve a high state of spiritual awareness. (Meditate is derived from the Latin verb mederi, meaning â€Å"remedy,† and is related to medical and medicine.) Mull, from the Middle English noun mul, meaning â€Å"dust,† is cognate with meal and refers not only to lengthy consideration but also to grinding. Ponder has the connotation of carefully weighing a problem (as a matter of fact, ponder stems from the Latin verb ponderare, meaning â€Å"weigh,† and is related to ponderous), with the implication of extended inconclusive thinking. A similar term with the same etymological origin is perpend. Reflect means, among other things, â€Å"think calmly and quietly†; its root is from flectere (meaning â€Å"bend†), which is also the source of flex. To ruminate is to slowly and repeatedly go over something as if chewing it like a ruminant, a type of animal, such as a cow, that chews its food over and over again. (The word stems from the Latin term rumen, the name in that language and in English for part of a cow’s stomach.) â€Å"Chew over† is an informal synonym. Others include the word eye and the phrases â€Å"kick around,† â€Å"pore over,† and â€Å"wrestle with.† Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? How The Media Has Influenced in the Construction of the US Latino Essay

How The Media Has Influenced in the Construction of the US Latino Identity - Essay Example This study has been prompted by some of the urgent issues about Latinos and their image, portrayed by American media. By analyzing the way in which U.S. magazines covered Latinos, this study raises the following questions, such as what was the number of magazine stories about Latinos, what were the topics of these stories, what are the main themes found in the coverage of Latinos. This mounting influence the Latino community has in U.S. society coupled with the important role of the news media warrants a study that examines how Latinos are represented in U.S. mainstream news magazines. The study went on to expound on the portrayals of Latinos. Since the majority of the stories were about immigration, the study focused on how Latinos were portrayed in this capacity. Latino immigrants in these magazines were presented in a negative fashion and were seen as a threat and a ‘disruptive force in U.S. society. However, it must also be included that six of these stories of immigration and other Latino focused articles portrayed them in a positive fashion in a political capacity. This literature review has shown that in U.S. advertisements, Latinos are either being underrepresented, misrepresented or not represented at all in U.S. consumer magazines. However, underrepresentation is a poor marketing strategy as the majority of consumers are Latinos. Generally, Latinos are being represented in U.S. consumer magazines as blue collar workers like janitors or cleaning people as well as dirty and lazy immigrants.

The Democracy Of Walt Whitman English Literature Essay

The Democracy Of Walt Whitman English Literature Essay Did you, too, O friend, suppose democracy was only for elections, for politics, and for a party name I say democracy is only of use there that it may pass on and come to its flower and fruit in manners, in the highest forms of interaction between people, and their beliefs in religion, literature, colleges and schools democracy in all public and private life. (Whitman, Democratic Vistas) Thus speaks Walt Whitman on how everyday life is democracy to him. Whitman conceives of democracy as freedom from restraint, as liberty to do as one pleases (Ford, Conception). The very idea of democracy is not for politics but for the people themselves in everything that they do, say, or even feel. By examining Whitmans works we can see his democratic theory constantly portrayed throughout them and how in his lifetime it altered with major events like the Civil War and him coming face to face with the iniquities of war. Walter Walt Whitman born 1819 was an American poet and is often called the father of free verse. Whitmans own admiration for democracy can be at least attributed to his parents, who showed their own admiration for their country by naming Whitmans younger brothers after their American heroes. At the age of 17, Whitman decided to teach and then in 1841 He decided to set his sights on journalism becoming interested in the working of political democracy. He started off with a weekly paper and then later became an editor in New York. In 1848 Whitman moved to New Orleans to be an editor for a magazine, while he was there for only a short time he saw the horrors of slavery and fully understand the depravity of it. In 1862 he moved to Washington, D.C. and helped with wounded veterans, all the way contemplating on the Civil war (Walt Whitman. Bio.com). Whitman celebrates democracy in many of his works and his idea of the individual relative to democracy is a nation as a unified whole made up of unique but equal individuals. In the poem Ones Self I Sing (Whitman, Leaves of Grass) Whitman celebrates the unique individual but also the word Democracy, the word En-masse. This poem emphasizes and praises the value of the individual living within democratic society. The last stanza speaks of Whitmans concept of unrestrained freedom, freest action formd, under the laws divineà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ and [sings] Of Life immense in passion, pulse, and powerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ Whitman singles out the word Cheerful referencing to how this theory of life is a joyous one. ONES-SELF I sing-a simple, separate Person; Yet utter the word Democratic, the word En-masse. Of Physiology from top to toe I sing; Not physiognomy alone, nor brain alone, is worthy for the muse-I say the Form complete is worthier far; The Female equally with the male I sing. Of Life immense in passion, pulse, and power, Cheerful-for freest action formd, under the laws divine, The Modern Man I sing. The relation to a democracy is that if founded on human rights is, as noted by Edward Dowden in The Poetry of Democracy The essential thing which gives one the freedom of the world is not to be born a man of this or that rank, or class, or caste, but simply to be born a man is what gives life worth living for. The second stanza focusing more on the subject of Whitmans poem and following poetry in Leaves of Grass, speaking of The Female equally with the maleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ and Physiology from top to toe I sing saying how Whitman will use everything to sing the individual and democracy. Whitman references his critics of saying that the common person is not a subject of poetry with multiple statements of ONES-SELF I sing-a simple, separate Person making note of the praise of a simple man and then the word En-masse showing the brotherhood of the mass of people that are subjects worthy of poetry. Another portion of the second stanza in Ones-Self I Sing Whitman writes Not physiognomy alone , nor brain alone, is worthy for the muse-I say the Form complete is worthier farà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ The Form is the unity of everything from the mind, the soul, to the beauty of the individual. He ends the poem by completing his reference to the common man by stating The Modern Man I sing I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear, Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong, The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam, The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work, The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck, The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing as he stands, The wood-cutters song, the ploughboys on his way in the morning, or at noon intermission or at sundown, The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at work, or of the girl sewing or washing, Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else, The day what belongs to the day-at night the party of young fellows, robust, friendly, Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs (Whitman. Leaves of Grass). This beautiful poem by Walt Whitman titled I hear America Singing speaks volumes of Whitmans pride in the common man and in democracy itself. In the first line I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear Whitman is hearing many versions of the songs of the people. While he doesnt state whether the singing is joyous or sorrowful or just for the sake of singing, he is referencing on how America is a diverse culture or has many faces and stories thus having varied carols. The next few lines mention multiple positions in the workforce each being blithe and strong. Whitman is expressing how everyone has a story from high to low and although each is different, they all have their freedom to do so. No matter their financial position or class each story is robust and lighthearted. The last part on the poem speaks of the women in America with Whitman wring of the freedom women enjoy in America with the line each singing what belongsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ to her. Whitmans main idea of this poem is that America works hard to achieve their goals and that the riches they get are not seen economically but in the pride of being free and living democracy every day. I go around among these sights, among the crowded hospitals doing what I can, yet it is a mere drop in the bucket. . . the path I follow, I suppose I may say, is my own. (Whitman, Drum Taps) As Whitman aged, his love for democracy and the United States grew and in his years he developed the ideas of slavery being immoral and that territories admitted into the United States should only be done so if they were free states. On the other, Whitman detested the abolitionist movement thinking that the extremist on both sides would lead the United States to war and threaten to tear his beloved democracy apart. He was right. During the Civil War, Whitman traveled to Washington, D.C. to take of his younger brother that had been wounded in battle. Upon arriving in Washington and seeing the state of the soldier and the hospitals, Whitman stayed for four years serving as a nurse and helping the soldiers write letters to home. The whole time Whitman was in Washington he was writing notes in little journals and talking and listening to soldiers stories, helping them with their physiological issues. From his journals and experiences that changed Whitmans life, he wrote his book of poetry called Drum Taps. The poetry within Drum Taps shadows Whitmans change throughout the Civil War. Starting off with poems like First O Songs for a Prelude. This poem basically was a recruitment poem for the Civil War with saying that New York is full of pride and joy as the soldiers go off to war. The poems that come later in the book take on a different tone with the poem By The Bivouacs Fitful Flame, which tells of a soldiers thoughts on coming: While wind in procession thoughts, O tender and wondrous thoughts/Of life and death-of home and the past and loved, and of those that are far away, this shows Whitmans empathy with homesick soldiers and their emotional experience of the soldier and their plights while at war. Whitmans Come Up From The Fields, Father depicts the families side of the war by receiving a letter from a stranger O this is not our sons writing, yet his name is signd/ O stricken mothers soul/ The only son is dead. Whitman had experience on both sides, often being the one writing those horrible letters to the soldiers families to being part of waiting to receive news of the brother, George. They were fortunate to never receive that letter. Whitman places his personal experiences in the hospital passing sweet hours/immortal and mystic hours with/you, dearest comrade into a battlefield setting in the poem Vigil Strange I Kept On The Field One Night. By changing the scenes from the hospitals to a battlefield, Whitman not only captures his own experiences but tells the stories of the soldiers and the war. Whitmans explores the psychological effects from the Civil War on Americans even stating Curious as it may seem the War, to me, proved humanity. The Civil War changed Whitman, altering his views of man in a democracy, where the common man saves the day. Whitman hoped to achieve greater unity through the war bringing people of all areas, classes, and wealth together. Whitman, through the Civil War, wrote some of his greatest democratic poetry encompassing all of human nature. He finishes Drum Taps by declaring yet there are two things inure to me:/ I have nourishd the wounded, and soothd many al dying soldier;/ And at intervals I have strung together a few songs,/ Fit for war, and the life of the camp.

Adopting Africans not the answer

In Adopting Africans not the answer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, argues against an appeal that Madonna has made on television: adopt an African child. Her opinion is summarized as, â€Å"Madonna could have urged others to help solve the problems by empowering, not failed leaders, but the people.†Adichie’s opinion can be categorized under both persuasion and deliberation. First, she expounds on what Madonna says on TV and then tries to persuade others to believe that Madonna, could have said something better. Therefore, her goal is to clarify what Madonna has said, and make a resolution as to what Madonna could have said. In the process of doing this, she also simultaneously presents to her readers the situation for children in Africa and how the public can help.As she narrates her African background and urges people to look more closely at Africa, and essentially, look far beyond what Madonna has said, she also deliberates on the better type of action between adopting a chi ld in Africa, or sending a donation to check to malaria-eradication organizations. Adichie wants her readers to believe that the better thing to do is send donation. My outlook on Adichie’s opinion is perhaps similar to her own opinion of Madonna – I wish Adichie could have focused on the fact that Africa needs donation, instead of going around in circles, telling a lot of things that could not strongly prove a point.Adichie’s article was full of herself. She starts with her childhood, goes on to tell what she feels, and ends the article with what she would think, which is only a poor anticipation of a scenario that do not give enough kick to support her arguments.Adichie could have been more straightforward, and started with what Madonna said on television. From there, she could have skipped some parts of her story and went straight to correct â€Å"the underlying notion that one helps Africa by adopting Africa's children.† Instead, she dragged on and too k Madonna’s adopted child’s biological father on the scene without empowering her opinion.Yet, when Adichie needed to expound, she failed. She wrote, â€Å"I wish she (Madonna) had added that Africa cannot depend on aid alone, that aid is like salted peanuts: The more failed leaders get, the more they want. I wish she had said she was setting up an organization run by locals to use donations as micro-credit.†Adichie could have directly compared the effects of helping a micro-credit and adopting a child in a bid to help Africa as a nation. But Adichie just carelessly went on without painting a clearer and crispier picture in the minds of her readers.Towards the end of her argument, she peppers her words with a lot of â€Å"I wonder,† which made her arguments a lot weaker and immature than what it should be. She may gotten the message across that Madonna could have said something better; but she did give a lot of depth to her explanation for that. So after a while, her reader forgets about what Madonna has said, and what she herself has said. It’s a shame because Adichie almost made a point – that Africa can be helped not just be adopting its children. But she merely touches on the â€Å"why† part of her article — where she was meant to strengthen her point and create an imprint in people’s minds — and clearly loses control of her argument. Overall, her article is doomed to be forgettable.SOURCE:CHIMAMANDA, N.A. (2006). Adopting Africans not the answer. How Would You Evaluate an Organization’s Hrims?

In modernize era, more and more technology has applied in business and management. Human resource information management system (HRIMS) is one of the applications used for managing people in organizations. However, to have the objective perspective, there could be a efficiency and practical review in organization’s HRIMS. Therefore, this paper will have an overview about benefits and barriers of HRIMS, after that there will be the analysis the effect of HRIMS on organization’s performance and job quality, and the value it brings to company. At first, HIRMS is known as a informatics technology system in which the information is stored and analyzed for purpose of supplying the precise and opportune reports on the management in organizations (Raymond 2010). In addition, HRIS is another definition about technological application in human resource management that is more usually used. Raymond (2010) also quotes the poll of An Australian Human Resource Institute that a large number of firms used HIRMS for recruitment and performance appraisal. HIRMS has a lot of advantages and one of them is cost reductions (Marler 2009; Bondarouk, Ruel and Heijden 2009). The companies which apply electronic human resource management can improve the communication between employees and also enhance the team work spirit. Besides that this system can help the staff increases the abilities and knowledge through the details of individual indicators and applying the adequate training (Boundarouk and Ruel 2009). Last but not least, HRIMS can provide the efficiency to the organizations (Marler 2009; Raymond 2010). The managers and employees can catch the latest information timely to do work conveniently and quickly. On the other hand, HIRMS also has a lot of barriers. According to Bondarouk, Ruel and Heijden (2009), the privacy of statistics should be concerned. Individual communications may cause the conflict between manager and staff, for example, a blog. Next, the security of the system is also the big problem. The accuracy of data is very important so that is necessary to protect HRIMS. Finally, Strohmeier (2007) mentions that the work stress is one of the issue of HRIMS. All the analyzed figures and activities at the workplace is noticed by employer are the pressure of employees. Sometimes, HRIMS makes the distrust in organizations (Strohmeier 2007). Thus, both strengths and weaknesses make the manager to consider how to apply HRIMS in the company. Next, there is the evidence, which proves that human resource management has an important influence on the performance of the organization (Jimenez-Jimenez and Sanz-Valle 2008) and a modern system can help human resource division reaches good performance (Mishra and Akman 2010). The first impact of electronic human resource management is the support for top management. When HRIMS is used reasonably, it can provide the powerful management tools for human resource and improve efficiency and strategy (Haines III and Lafleur 2008). In addition, employers can analyze staff profile, salary fund and market trend and give suitable and timely dicisions (Reddick 2009). Besides that Reddick (2009) also emphasizes that informatics technology system increases the relationship of human resource with other departments. Because human resource division has the closely relation with others and HRIMS can help they communicate easily with less errors and support each other more effectively. Thus, performance of organization can used to evaluate the effectiveness and suitability of HRIMS. Furthermore, job quality is one of factor to evaluate organization’s HRIMS. In fact, human resource management influences job quality including work environment and individual development (Mitlacher 2008). There are many researchers prove that the informatics technology application can enhance the acceptance and satisfaction of employees because of time saving and providing accuracy comments of their chief (Strohmeier 2007). In addition, employee can recognize their strengths and weaknesses and they would be directed to join development promotion training. As the result, right people in suitable position can help the quality of management (Altarawneh and Al-Shqairat 2010). Consequently, personnel is important part of company so job quality can used to assess HRIMS. Finally, the value, which HRIM brings to the company, should be assessed. Initially, type of the system must be depended on the size of corporation. Altarawneh and Al-Shqairat (2010) find that the advantages and disadvantages of HRIMS are different based on whether the company large or small. As the result, the differences between big and small company are cost and risk of the application (Altarawneh and Al-Shqairat 2010). For example, Bondarouk, Ruel and Heijden (2009) indicate that small organizations that have less five hundred employees prefer less cost and more flexible software. Two of the successful systems are SAP and Oracle that are used by large market of organizations (Lee, Olson and Lee 2009). Furthermore, managers can consider the advantages of HRIMS. With this system, they can organize all departments effectively, control the information closely and improve the work environment. For instant, paying salary exactly, which required precisely data of staff is a trouble in some organizations (Valkig and Stigdon 2008). The system can uses data immediately with fewer errors to calculate the wage accurately. Moreover, the executives can solve the barriers of HRIMS such as issuing company policy to help them to avoid legal problem (Raymond 2010) or enhancing the security measures. At last, managers should think about the friendliness of the system. They must consider the technology acceptance model which is useful and easy to use (Bondarouk, Ruel and Heijden 2009). Therefore, evaluating the value of the system can help the manager increase the benefit of HRIMS. Thus, in recent years, applying HRIMS in management is becoming more popular so the managers should have the overview of the effectiveness of this system on their organizations. At first, there should be a evaluation of the benefits and the barriers of the system. Next, the impact on the performance of company is also considered. How the system supports management and how it connects different divisions together. In addition, job quality is one of the most important factors. Employers should mention the effect of HRIMS on work environment and the personnel development of their staff. Lastly, the organizations should evaluate the value of the system. The accurately assessment would help the company to have the right strategy to develop.
